About CFLC

WE ENVISION A COMMUNITY IN WHICH ALL ADULTS HAVE THE LITERACY SKILLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED.

While most of us have strong literacy skills that we take for granted, thousands of adults in our community don’t have these skills and their lives are impacted in profound ways.

  • An estimated 14,000+ adults in New Hanover County function at a “below basic” literacy level

  • 47,000 more functioning at a “basic” literacy level

  • 12,700 people in New Hanover County live in a household where a language other than English is spoken

These neighbors struggle daily to fill out job applications, use maps, understand information from a school or doctor’s office, and perform countless other tasks. They want – and need – to develop their skills to succeed in their jobs, take better care of their families and contribute more fully to their community.

OPENING DOORS AND CHANGING LIVES,

EVERY DAY.

The Cape Fear Literacy Council offers programs in:

  • Adult Literacy

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)

  • GED and test preparation

  • Math skills

  • Computer literacy

  • Workforce development

In supporting these programs, you support the adult learner and your own neighborhood. Research-based statistics show that illiteracy affects the costs of social services and has a direct effect on your taxes and your community. Click here to learn more.
